GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS AT THE RYMAN AUDITORIUM

Tonight marked a very special milestone for the Vermont quintet led by a raucous sex pistol known as Grace Potter. It was their first ever headlining show at the mother church of country music, The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, and the first night of a dual stint in town in front of a sold-out crowd.

The show opened with a spirited performance from old-time string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, that made me very thankful to have arrived on time. If you haven’t caught up with their musical stylings yet, do yourself a favor and and sample some. You’ll be very glad that you did.

But then it was time for the main event. Potter slinked on stage in a super short black mini-dress, holding a white, Gibson Flying V. It was just one of the many instruments she would play throughout the evening and her strut indicated that she knew just how good she looked holding it.

“You know we were nominated for a CMA Award this year?” Potter later asked the crowd. “When I found out, I said, what’s a CMA?”

Her joke about her nomination for a Country Music Award, of which there were two thanks to her duet with Kenny Chesney on “You and Tequila” brokered a few laughs from the audience all too familiar with the huge honor but her stellar set did more than prove she deserved the recognition.

Wailing through a slew of songs from their 2010 self-titled album that had the audience up on its feet, clapping and singing along from the start of the show, GPN particularly shone on “Hot Summer Night,” so much so that I wondered how the encore could possibly top it.

But it wasn’t just the fast tracks that were impressive. Mid-set, they slowed things down and decided to “do something that they knew they shouldn’t do” according to Potter, and cover Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings’ “Elvis Presley Blues.”

It was a bold move in a venue where the original songwriters had played so many times but one that paid off and established Potter as much more than just a gyrating, hair-whipping front-gal.

See for yourself as there are still a few tickets left for Monday night’s show and I can guarantee they are worth every penny. You can also catch Carolina Chocolate Drops on Monday afternoon at 1pm for their special in-store appearance at Grimey’s New and Preloved Music.
