The image that will define 2011: Christians form a circle around praying Muslim protesters in Cairo, Egypt in February 2011. The protest, one of many known collectively as the Arab Spring, dominated the media in the early months of 2011 as dictators fell and new governments were formed.
The photo, which was published in newspapers, on blogs and aired on television around the world, was not snapped by a professional photographer and was not delivered by a wire service, but instead was taken by a fellow demonstrator and was uploaded to the Twitter social media service.
